Procedure

Further, we have established a state-of-the-art infrastructure with ultramodern medical equipment and devices to support spinal fusion surgery.

The patient will be under general anesthesia during the spinal fusion procedure. Therefore, s/he would not feel the pain or difficulties during the surgical session. The blood pressure, heart rate, and other vitals would be constantly monitored during the process, to ensure a healthy and successful completion.

A bone graft would be used for fusing the two or more vertebrae, as required. A small segment from the pelvic bone, a synthetic bone or an allograft would be used for preparing the bone graft.

The orthopaedic surgeon would make a small incision at the area of spinal fusion. The incision would be on the front area of the neck in the case of cervical fusion.  The bone graft would be fixed on the defective vertebras. Alternatively, the bone graft material may be inserted in the affected area.

The orthopaedic surgeon would fuse the vertebrae together, with the bone graft placed in between, using metal plates, screws and rods for the period of healing. Synthetic material might be used in certain cases that optimizes bone growth and expedites the fusion of the vertebrae.

Spinal fusion surgery is advised for patients with Diffuse Idiopathic Skeletal Hyperostosis (DISH). This medical condition normally occurs due to arthritis in the tendons and ligaments in the spine. Diffuse Idiopathic Skeletal Hyperostosis Surgery is a proven spinal fusion method to cure the condition.

Recovery Post Spinal Fusion

The patient may have to remain hospitalized for 2-3 days post spinal fusion surgery.  Our specialists would observe the individual for healthy well-being prior to discharge from the hospital. The panel of surgeons would examine the patient before deciding upon release.

The healing might take about a couple of months. The period is required for the vertebrae to fuse together. Every person who undergoes spinal fusion must pursue the directives given by our doctors. It would ensure early healing of the vertebrae and mobility. The diet and movements would be according to the directives of the specialist doctor.
